Say NO to Soft Drinks, Say YES to Water

Summer is around the corner, so will be the flurry of TV ads by soft drink manufacturers. Your LED TV would spill out dozens of commercials endorsing their drinks to be the “real thirst quenchers.” Far from being healthy, most of these artificial sugar-based drinks can be potentially harmful to you. And, companies are not bound to inform you about the hazards of drinking sugary drinks as they want to keep selling. If we look at the world consumption statistics for drinks, it is both shocking and saddening to see that soft beverages make the most consumable drink in many countries of the world.

How Soft Beverages Affect People?

Over and above, under the title of soft drinks – which count all sorts of energy drinks, juice drinks, flavored water, diet sodas, carbonated water, packed fruit smoothies, store-bought lemonades – people are damaging their health to an irreparable level. Soft drink consumption has become a regular feature of the unhealthy lifestyle which people are accustomed to, for the sake of taste, easy affordability and availability of such drinks, and atomistic approach towards life. It becomes more popular during summer seasons given that in the soaring temperature, their sweeteners, fizz, and flavorings become all the more tempting.

High Sugar Content Leads to Health Problems

The most dangerous effect of soft drink consumption is down to its high sugar content, which adds up the total calories, and leads to obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, dental decay and many other problems including cancer. According to the WHO, the daily consumption of sugar for an average person should be limited to 6 tea spoons. And precisely, a 350ml can of soft drink contains about 10 tea spoons of sugar which is almost double the amount of the suggested daily intake. Yet there are people who don’t even think before guzzling another can of soft drink.

To add fuel to the fire, companies often use High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), a common sweetener which is the cheaper version of sugar made from corn starch, to make additional profits. Unlike glucose which can be broken down by your body cells, fructose can only be processed by the liver. This HFCS, when consumed in excess, overloads the liver and can result in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease – a problem which is related with high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Artificial Sweeteners are No Respite

The drinks that claim to be “DIET” ones with no sugar and zero calories, are the worst as they contain artificial sweeteners which make you crave more for normal sugar and can also result in irritable bowel syndrome. Phosphoric acid, which is often used in these drinks to impart them a tangy flavor, is another harmful constituent that causes kidney problems, non-alcoholic liver diseases, osteoporosis, and heart problems too.

Preservatives & Additives Are More Dangerous

Furthermore, Taurine, which is a commonly found ingredient in the caffeine and sugar-based energy drinks, is another dangerous substance that results in a number of illnesses, ranging from high blood pressure to strokes and seizures to heart disease. It’s been observed that over-consumption of such energy drinks, or sometimes their reaction with indefinite substances, can also result in instant death.

Soft beverages may also lead to different types of cancer owing to the presence of preservatives, synthetic colors, additives like sodium benzoate, and the availability in plastic bottles and aluminum cans. Sleep disruption, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) are some other hard-hitting resultants of these drinks. The drinks which come with “Contains No Fruit” label, mockingly, reveals about their zero-nutritional content. However, what is more disturbing than the lack of nutrition is the high level of harmful ingredients in regular soft drinks and the health risk they come with.

Pure Water is Certainly the Best Drink

As we all know, people are already consumed by severe diseases, infections, syndromes and what not. And more than half of the world’s diseases are due to either not drinking enough water, or consumption of contaminated water. It’s high time to take the matter in your hands, to save yourself and the coming generations from the not so “soft” beverages. We need to pledge ourselves to resort to the original way of restoring fluid in our body, i.e. drinking plenty of pure, fresh water. And, you can ensure this purity and freshness by investing in a high-quality water purifier.

Pure water is one of the best ways to hydrate yourself to health. And it is a vital requirement to live.
