How Ceiling Fan Blade Angle Affects Electricity Consumption?

We all use ceiling fans in our homes and offices, without giving a second thought. With usage, comes along the need of cleaning the fan too. For obvious reasons, fans require regular maintenance, and more often than not, while cleaning the fans, we tend to disturb their blade angle without even realizing. Since fans are hung from the ceiling, it is quite difficult to reach them. While cleaning, we often pull the fan blades to clean the dust and grime properly. And this results in deviation in the required fan blade angle. This, not only hampers the fan’s performance, but also impacts the electricity consumption. Let’s make it clearer by understanding the working mechanism of the ceiling fan.

Working Mechanism of a Ceiling Fan

A ceiling fan works on a simple mechanism in which a motor at its center rotates the attached blades when switched on. The fan blades rotate at a speed, and push the air down. They actually work like an oar which is used to row a boat.  The way the oar displaces water and the boat moves ahead, the blade of the ceiling fan pushes the air downwards. Any person, who knows how to row a boat, understands that the best efficiency can be attained when the oars are used at a specific angle. Likewise, the best efficiency of a ceiling fan is obtained when the fan blade has an angle of 10-12 degrees.

While manufacturing, companies do take note of the required blade angle to enable the best performance out of a ceiling fan. However, while using, you must also make sure that the blade angle does not get disturbed. Just like the oars, if the angle is less, then the effort required would be less, there will be no movement though. A flat ceiling fan blade will act like a wing of an airplane that cuts through the air easily; however, there will be no air movement. On the other hand, if the angle is bigger, the fan will make a lot of noise and its motor would consume more electricity to move the blades through the air; just like, if you hold the oar flat and try to row, you will require tremendous effort to row the boat.

What You Can Do?

Be careful while cleaning the ceiling fans. You must not put push or pull the fan blades while cleaning. Use a platform or ladder of sufficient height to reach the fan blades. Clean them gently without exerting much pressure. Another point to consider is, never mix the blades of different fans. Each ceiling fan has its particular set of blades which are optimized to work in a specific assembly. You need not to make your own alterations to it. If done otherwise, it could disturb the balance of the fan and can also add to the power consumption.
